Story Summary

The episode begins when Principal Skinner announces an exciting school competition. Springfield Elementary students will have the opportunity to take a ride aboard the USS Tom Clancy, a nuclear-powered attack submarine. However, there is a catch: only the students with the best behaviour records will be allowed to participate.

Skinner gives every student a clean slate, meaning Bart has the perfect opportunity to forget about his previous misbehaviour. Determined to experience the submarine adventure, Bart decides to become the best-behaved student in the school.

For Bart, however, behaving himself is much harder than expected. He constantly finds himself surrounded by opportunities to cause trouble. Every small mistake could get his name removed from Skinner's list, so Bart has to carefully control his usual mischievous personality.

Despite his best efforts, Bart eventually finds himself in trouble and fears that his chance to ride the submarine is gone. The situation becomes even more frustrating when he realises how strict Skinner's rules really are.

Lisa and Krusty's Story

At the same time, Lisa Simpson discovers that Krusty the Clown is experiencing serious financial problems.

Lisa wants to help Krusty protect his career, so she comes up with a creative business idea. She suggests that Krusty expand his television programme internationally by selling foreign rights to his show.

The plan initially appears to be a brilliant solution. Krusty's programme becomes available in other countries, giving him another source of income.

However, the international versions of the show don't always go according to plan. Different countries adapt Krusty's programme in unusual ways, resulting in hilarious versions of the character.

One of the most memorable examples is Jamaican Krusty, voiced by guest star Kevin Michael Richardson.

Bart's Submarine Adventure

The submarine storyline is the heart of the episode. Bart becomes obsessed with proving that he can behave well enough to earn a place on the trip.

The USS Tom Clancy provides a fun setting for the story, with the students getting a glimpse of life aboard a military submarine. The situation also creates plenty of opportunities for the Simpsons' trademark jokes and exaggerated comedy.

Bart eventually learns that trying to completely change his personality just to impress someone isn't necessarily the best approach. His determination and experience throughout the competition become an important part of the episode.
